Most in-car entertainment systems come installed by the car’s manufacturer. However, most car buyers nowadays also prefer to add other items that will enhance these pre-installed systems. A common in-car entertainment addition is installing a portable DVD player, either at the front for the driver’s viewing pleasure or at the back for those drivers with kids in tow. The installation of an additional entertainment device at the back helps to calm down those hyper-active kids and makes traveling a less stressful experience, especially on long trips. This will keep the kids occupied during the journey by entertaining them with cartoon movies.

The portable DVD at the front is intended for the driver’s relaxation when the car is not moving, such as when waiting for Mom to come back from a short grocery trip to the supermarket. This is to occupy the driver’s waiting time and make waiting less boring. It is certainly not advisable to be viewing the DVD movie while driving, it goes without saying.

Music plays a very big part in in-car entertainment. In fact, I would advise drivers to prefer these type of entertainment than the visual entertainment offered by DVD players. The reason? These music or audio entertainment does not force you to take your eyes off the road which makes for a safer driving experience. Imagine if you took just a split-second gander at the DVD player then just at the same moment, a small child suddenly crossed the road to retrieve a wayward ball? That would be a real emergency situation that you certainly would not like to experience, right?

All the pre-installed entertainment systems in the car, whether audio or video, can be augmented and improved by the car owner. This depends on his preference as well as financial constraints. I know of some car owners who spend a small fortune on these significant improvements. They are usually satisfied with all that added expense as justified with the enhanced satisfactory sensation of being entertained while driving. This is especially on long trips to out-of-state places. This makes the driving less tiring and definitely less boring.

There are several instances that accidents happened because the driver fiddled with the systems even for just a split second. This takes his eyes off the road where they should be in the first place. Enhanced entertainment systems are ideally suited for responsible drivers. I do not recommend these added entertainment features to younger drivers. These drivers usually have young friends also on board which increases the distraction a notch higher.
